On 16th November 2021, Jersey’s Minister for External Relations, Senator Ian Gorst, held a virtual meeting with Rt. Hon Emily Thornberry MP, Shadow Secretary of State for International Trade. This meeting formed part of the Government of Jersey’s programme of regular engagement with UK Parliamentarians.
Senator Gorst and the Shadow International Trade Secretary discussed the issue of licensing of French vessels to fish in Jersey waters, based on their track record in the three years preceding the start of the UK-EU Trade and Cooperation Agreement (TCA). Senator Gorst emphasised Jersey’s reasonable, evidence-based approach to implementing the new fisheries regime established under the TCA – including the provision of extra time for French vessels to provide the necessary information – and that the Government of Jersey continues to remain open to receipt of new evidence. Senator Gorst noted that the Government of Jersey continues to engage in close dialogue with the UK to ensure that fair arrangements are in place for all parties.
The meeting also covered other areas of mutual interest, including Jersey’s participation in the UK’s non-EU trade agreements. Senator Gorst underlined the UK Government’s constitutional responsibility to represent Jersey’s interests with respect to these negotiations.
The Government of Jersey will continue to work closely with Rt. Hon Emily Thornberry MP, alongside other UK Parliamentarians across the political spectrum, to ensure the Island’s interests continue to be recognised and addressed at Westminster.
