Jersey Ministers host House of Commons briefing event

December 7, 2023

On the 22nd November, the Chief Minister, Deputy Kristina Moore, and the Minister for External Relations, Deputy Philip Ozouf, supported by the Jersey London Office UK Affairs Team, hosted a ‘breakfast briefing’ in the House of Commons. The event was aimed at parliamentarians both familiar with and new to Jersey, as an introduction to the Island’s constitutional relationship with the UK and an opportunity to update on the state of Jersey’s relations with the UK, the EU, as well as on domestic issues.

Attendees included the Shadow Foreign Office Minister, Stephen Doughty (Labour MP for Cardiff South and Penarth), and Shadow Northern Ireland Minister, Fleur Anderson (Labour MP for Putney), alongside other members of the Channel Islands APPG, including the Chair, Sheryll Murray (Conservative MP for South East Cornwall).

The discussion was wide-ranging, including updates on Jersey’s participation in the UK’s Free Trade agenda, the fishing industry, sanctions implementation, wider relations with the EU, and the aftermath of Storm Ciaran.

This was the first time Jersey has made use of the room generously designated for the use of the Crown Dependencies and Overseas Territories by the Speaker of the House of Commons. We look forward to hosting further such briefing events in the new year, and exploring the full potential of this unique space, including alongside our fellow Crown Dependencies Guernsey and the Isle of Man.
