Shadow Lord Chancellor visits Jersey

August 16, 2023

Jersey was pleased to host the Shadow Secretary of State for Justice and Lord Chancellor, Steve Reed OBE MP, for an introductory visit to the Island on Friday 11th August. The visit follows engagements between the Minister for External Relations, Deputy Philip Ozouf, and Mr Reed in London last November.

Over the course of a focused meeting with the Deputy Chief Minister, Minister for External Relations and Minister for Social Security, the Shadow Lord Chancellor had the opportunity to learn in depth about the constitutional relationship between the UK and Jersey, and the role of the Ministry of Justice in respect of this. Both parties indicated a strong willingness to strengthen ties and to deepen mutual understanding, underscoring Jersey’s commitment to uphold a positive and mutually beneficial relationship with the UK irrespective of which party leads the Government.

A meeting with the Bailiff in the Royal Court gave the Shadow Lord Chancellor an overview of Jersey’s parliamentary and judicial systems, and how these occasionally intersect with the UK Government.

Mr Reed also had opportunities to learn about the Island’s many facets beyond government and politics, including its economy, culture, and society. A visit to the Occupation Tapestry in St Helier provided the Shadow Secretary of State with an introduction to Jersey’s history under Nazi German occupation, and the Battle of Flowers parade was a flavour of the Island’s vibrant culture and community spirit.

The Jersey London Office looks forward to further engagement with the Shadow Lord Chancellor and his colleagues on the front and back benches of the Labour Party, as we work to ensure the Jersey’s voice is heard and understood across the UK political spectrum.
