Minister for External Relations holds introductory meeting with Chair of the International Relations and Defence Select Committee

October 14, 2020

On 13 October, Jersey’s Minister for External Relations, Senator Ian Gorst, met with the Rt. Hon Baroness Anelay of St Johns DBE, Chair of the International Relations and Defence Select Committee in the House of Lords. The Committee is responsible for scrutinising the UK Government’s international relations and defence policy.

The meeting provided for a valuable introductory discussion on several areas of mutual interest, including Covid-19 response, and Jersey’s interests and priorities in the EU-UK future partnership negotiations and third country trade negotiations. The UK’s constitutional responsibilities with respect to promoting Jersey’s international identity, as outlined in the 2007 International Framework Agreement, and on defence were also discussed. Currently the UK Government, on behalf of the Crown, retains formal responsibility for the Island’s defence.

The meeting presented a further example of Jersey’s long-standing and positive engagement with Parliamentarians across both Houses in the UK Parliament. The Government of Jersey London Office will continue to work closely with Members of the Committee to ensure the Island’s interests are upheld.
