Jersey represented at World Economic Forum

June 3, 2015

Assistant Chief Minister, Senator Philip Ozouf, will represent Jersey at the World Economic Forum’s 25th African meeting in Cape Town from 3 to 5 June 2015.

Senator Ozouf will be one of 90 government figures from around the world to attend the meeting, alongside more than 1,000 leaders from business, politics, academia, civil society and the media. The programme for this year’s meeting will focus on three themes: enabling markets; marshalling resources; and inspiring creativity. Senator Ozouf will participate in those aspects of the three-day programme that deal with tech and digital sectors, as well as mining, development and professional services.

Senator Ozouf commented “The World Economic Forum’s highly respected meetings provide opportunities to engage at the highest level with political and business leaders from a number of different countries. It is important that our voice is heard and that we clearly communicate the role that Jersey can play in Africa and the actions that we have taken to remain at the forefront of international cooperation and regulation.

“The meetings that I will attend in Cape Town will enable me to further engage on Jersey’s behalf with a wide range of ministers and officials from around the world.”

The Assistant Chief Minister’s attendance at the World Economic Forum follows a four-day itinerary in East Africa, where he visited projects funded by the Jersey Overseas Aid Commission (JOAC) in Kenya and Rwanda.

Senator Ozouf, who visited a range of JOAC-funded projects on behalf of the Commission (more information to follow in a separate news release), said “We are looking to Africa not only for mutually beneficial business opportunities; we also take our corporate and social responsibilities seriously. This was apparent in the excellent work that I was privileged to see in Kenya and Rwanda on behalf of the JOAC.”

After leaving Cape Town on 5 June, Senator Ozouf will join representatives of Jersey Finance at their ‘Mapping the Future’ events in Cape Town, Johannesburg, Nairobi and Lagos.
